South Tenerife Congress Centre, Playa de Las Americas, Costa Adeje, 1998-
"The congress centre of Costa Adeje on Tenerife is located in difficult
surroundings due to its vicinity to the motorways of South Tenerife. The only
links to the environment are the rugged mountains and the sea, which surround
the building with their impressive grandeur, affording a splendid view right
across to the island of La Gomera. In the face of this situation the only solution
is to upgrade the landscape by extending these with geometrical cliffs, which
accommodate various sections and facilities of the project. The existing geological
faults emphasize the impression that the roof consists of a liquid, permanently
in motion, and enclosing the area from all sides. This liquid spreads and increases,
and in doing so creates openings for illumination and ventilation, enhancing
the impression of incredible lightness of this wave-like surface. The massive
elements house offices and sanitary and supply facilities, i.e. those areas
which need to be more independent from a functional aspect, while the remaining
space is available for a wide variety of activities, depending on the extent
to which it has been partitioned. The centre has three different entrances which
can be used either together or separately, favouring flexibility with regard
to time and space. The entrance to the cafeteria and the auditorium seats is
situated above the main entrance, which leads into the large main foyer.
There is a further entrance on the upper floor, where the offices are located.
For concerts with a large number of visitors, a third entrance via a ramp leading
in from the street is provided."
