The artist Mischa Kuball, the architects Riken Yamamoto and his partner, Beda Faessler, have developed a light installation for the Friedrich Bridge at Museum Island. Bridges represent much more than technical achievements in engineering, a fact that becomes abundantly clear at this particular location. The project team is concerned with the crossing, linking, floating, and separating characteristics embodied in this footbridge in particular.
The team plans a highly powerful video light projection onto the sidewalk of the Friedrich Bridge that will alter the bridge's physical appearance at night: the bridge will be transformed into a bridge of light, whose glow is visible from a great distance. A computer-generated water pattern simulating the Spree will be projected onto the bridge's pavement from two sides. The projection will cover the entire ground surface.
The artificially produced water flow will bridge the real flow of the river, thereby depicting the conflict between nature and virtual reality. The intensely flickering projection will dissolve the walkway's contours and create the impression of an unstable bridge. The passers-by will stop for a moment, uncertain as to whether they can actually cross the bridge. Their legs will be visually immersed in the flowing water. Powerful beamers hidden under the bridge will illuminate the Spree as well, disclosing the movements of the river's flow to the observers.
