Team: Olaf Nicolai, Berlin + Public
Place: The banks of the Spree
Project: "Dromio"

The artist Olaf Nicolai interprets bridges as functional objects, built only in those places justified by needs. While these needs can be very practical, they can also be motivated by curiosity and hope. The "other" shore possesses significance for the person who seizes the initiative to "build a bridge". Therefore, a relationship exists before there is a connection.

By the same token, bridges are only built in those places where the shores act as signals or signs, and they are given attention. If these functions are missing, no bridge will be built or existing bridges abandoned.

Based on these considerations, Nicolai has decided not to carry out a structural intervention on a bridge in collaboration with architects or engineers. Instead, he has suggested a project for the bank and bridge landscape along the Spree in which the public becomes the partner, hereby referring to the aforementioned constellations that precede the implemented architecture.

Nicolai will call upon the public in a full-page ad taken out in a Berlin newspaper without mentioning the artist or project name.
