The starting point for ‘con_con 2004: constructed connections’ was set by the questioning of the relationship between city centre and periphery.
In the case of Berlin this connecting bridge is undoubtedly formed by the River Spree. Yet the presence of the Spree is barely perceptible in the Eastern part of the city due to historical reasons. Access points along and across the river are missing. This example exposes the specific urban significance of bridges and it is for that reason, that ‘con_con 2004’ focuses on the building of bridges as an interdisciplinary challenge. Particular importance is placed on the dissolution of the traditional separations: architect=design, engineer=construction, artist=décor and on the establishment of fine art as an integral element of urban planning and design.
The title ‘constructed connections’ also relates to the communicative interactions deriving from the connection between two poles. Thus ‘con_con’ is meant to be a platform of discussion about the significance and function of bridges – in the structural as well as sociological sense.
